Tata Photon Plus USB modem tariffs and review

Tata has come up with a new Wireless Broadband service called as the Tata Photon Plus (photon +) , which works with a USB modem. It promises a speed of upto 3.1 mbps. But remember that the speed depends on the time of the day, the web page being accessed etc. Also this speed may only be upto their ISP and not the speed that’ll be delivered to you. So better confirm this before you proceed to subscribe.
At present (2009-06-27) this service is only being offered in Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai, Jaipur, J&K, and a few north eastern states. (See Update below)
The USB modem is only available in a Sale model unlike BSNL where USB modems can also be used under rentals models.
The plans start from as low as Rs.500 per month to Rs.1500 per month apart the from the price of the USB modem which is a one time charge of around Rs.1800.
For the Rs.500 plan, you get a bandwidth (download+upload+browsing) of 0.5 GB per month and for the 1500 plan you get a bandwidth of 15 GB.
You can also pay for what you use with some plans like Use n Pay for which the monthly rental is Rs.250.
Coming to its service quality, don’t get attracted by its eye catching advertisements. It justifies the advertisements strictly in the said cities. So if you live in cities like Mumbai, Bangalore or Hyderabad you may try Photon + as you will get speeds of at least 1mbps in these areas. If you live in other places then don’t expect this Photon + to be any different from your 128kbps dial-up connection.

Tata Photon Plus, today launched three new ‘Unlimited Internet Plans‘ with Fare Usage Policy (FUP) on data cap of 5GB, 10 GB and 15GB for its postpaid customers across India.
Tata Teleservices brings the Unlimited plans to new and existing customers of Photon+. At present Huawei-made Tata Photon+ USB Modem is sold at Rs.1799 and if you are committed to their postpaid plans for 12 months, you will get discounts worth Rs.150 every month i.e. full refund of your modem price.
Recent market trends show operators are bringing plans with ‘Unlimited’ tag which is offering a certain usage limit at high speed and then you can continue accessing internet at low speed. for general users these plans are good,
Regarding the comparison between Tata Photon+ & MTS MBlaze’s so-called Unlimited plan, MTS is offering cheaper tariff and that comes for prepaid users, while Tata Photon+ ‘Unlimited’ plans are available on Postpaid customers only, and at higher price.

Tata Photon Plus Mobile BroadBand 800 Unlimited Plan Reality Check

Tata Photon plus+ recently launched a new plan which they call the UNLIMITED plan.I think it is now become the common practice of Indian telecom operators to provide UNLIMITED service of everything.But behind the scenes fact is nothing is UNLIMITED.Everything comes under the so called FAIR USAGE POLICY.Tata Photon plus is now available for unlimited usage at just Rs 800.You must be wondering how they can do such stupid things,but my friend there comes the catch the UNLIMITED according to Tata Photon plus is just 5GB.This is so pathetic.How could anyone say what is unlimited and everyone knows nothing is limited in Broadband.Even I can download more than 10 GB using GPRS 24X7.The Indian telecom Industry are now calling this UNLIMITED as far as it comes under FAIR USAGE POLICY that is 5GB per month.And what worse after finishing your limited they will take your speed to the dark age of 155 kbps.This is rediculous I thought that competition in the market will benefit the user but what happening is just reverse.Customer are begging for quality and price effective service and it seems the Telecom giants are too far from reality.In such scenarios I remeber only one name BSNL.BSNL is offering unlimited (really unlimited no kidding) download only at 750 per month.I have heard quite good reviews from my friends but I personally have not tried yet.I still feel BSNL is best Broadband provider in country in any form of connection.You can give it a try and one more thing,before buying any product like Tata Photon Plus or Reliance NetConnect Broadband + please don't forget to see the coverage map as services are not available in whole country.So take a serious not of that.By the way plan details of Tata photon plus unlimited Broadband 800 plan.*Unlimited usage till 5GB

TTSL/TTML sales/service outlets would provide information about ASCs of USB modem manufacturer and will facilitate such an approach. However, TTSL/TTML is not responsible for any claim arising on account of faulty USB modems.
